Morocco: 12,000 jobs and 8 agreements in the automotive industry

Morocco signed 8 agreements in the mechanical engineering sector worth 175 M$. The Moroccan Minister of Industry and Trade indicated that the signing of these agreements should lead to the creation of around 12,000 direct jobs.

According to a press release, the Moroccan Minister of Industry and Trade, Riad Mazur, signed eight agreements on Thursday with five major international companies specializing in the manufacture of parts and components for automotive brands and plants based in the Kingdom or for export abroad. The total investment value amounts to 1.7 billion dirhams.

According to the same source, this new investment "is part of a drive to strengthen integration and production capacities for car wiring systems, electrical conductors, wiring harnesses for electric cars, and plastic parts and other high-tech trades."

These are Yazaki, Sumitomo, Lear, Stahlschmidt and TE Connectivitywhich are world-renowned OEM manufacturers and will be implemented in the cities of Tangier, Casablanca, Meknes and Kénitra.

Some of these companies have decided to turn to Morocco after leaving Russia because of the restrictions imposed by the United States.

So, what are these companies, and how important are they to the automotive industry?

Yazaki - Japan (Jobs in Meknes, Tangier and Kenitra)

Yazaki Corporation is an international automotive subcontractor, specializing in wiring harnesses, instrumentation and components such as connectors and terminals. The company's origins and headquarters are in Japan, but in 2011, just over 90 % of its workforce was located outside the home country. With a total of 306,118 employees, it achieved sales of over US$17.6 billion in 2017.

New job opportunities in the Yazaki Group :

  • New automotive wiring production unit in Meknes: 2,300 jobs.
  • Expansion of automotive wiring production units in Kénitra and Tangiers (adding 2,000 direct jobs for each unit)

Sumitomo - Japan (Jobs in Casablanca)

The Sumitomo Group is one of Japan's largest business groups. In particular, it owns the Mazda brand, which has entered the premium car segment.

Sumitomo Mazda Motor Corporation achieved sales of over 22 billion US dollars in 2016.

  • Expansion of an electrical harness production unit in Casablanca: 2,000 job opportunities.

Lear Corporation - United States (Jobs in Meknes and Tangier)

Lear Corporation is a U.S.-based manufacturer and distributor of automotive interiors. Lear Corporation is the world's second-largest manufacturer of automotive seating. Its sales totaled $20.5 billion in 2017.

New job opportunities at Lear Corporation :

  • New industrial unit for the production of electrical harnesses and cables in Meknes: 1995 job offers.
  • New terminal and connector production unit in Tangiers: 170 jobs.

STAHLSCHMIDT Morocco, ScS group - Germany (Tangier)

Specializing in components and assemblies for mechanical release systems: SCS develops and produces innovative Bowden cables, release units and plastic injection-molded components for its automotive and industrial customers.

New job opportunities in STAHLSCHMIDT :

  • New Bowden cable and release systems production unit in Tangiers: 1,075 job offers.

TE Connectivity - United States (Jobs in Tangier)

TE Connectivity is an American technology company domiciled in Switzerland that designs and manufactures connectors and sensors for several industries, including automotive, aerospace, defense, medical, oil & gas, consumer electronics and energy.

With 89,000 employees, it has sales of $15 billion in 2021.

New job opportunities at TE Connectivity :

  • New connector molding and assembly plant in Tangiers: 350 direct job opportunities.
