Submission of national visa application D

The visa application must be accompanied by the appropriate documents to obtain a visa. Lack of preparation or falsification of documents may result in visa refusal. Visa decisions generally take between 30 and 90 days, depending on the consulate.

Responsibilities and obligations after obtaining a visa

The holder of a researcher visa can only look for job opportunities in Portugal, and not in other Schengen countries. The visa allows only one entry into Portugal, which means that it is not possible to travel abroad for the first 120 days, or for the remaining 60 days if an extension is requested.

The Portuguese government is simplifying the procedures for obtaining a tax identification number (NIF), which will be automatically assigned when registering for social security and applying for access to the public health system, known as the NSS number.

Post-landing and family reunification

After signing an employment contract in Portugal, the visa holder can apply for a residence permit, valid for two years or for the duration of the contract. Once the visa holder has found a job and obtained a residence permit in the country, he or she can invite his or her family to join him or her.

Finding a job and adapting to life in Portugal

Once you've arrived in Portugal, it's a good idea to focus on the job search. Use online resources, professional networks and recruitment agencies to identify opportunities that match your skills and interests. Familiarize yourself with local culture and customs is a good way to ease your integration into Portuguese society.

Renewal of residence permit

The residence permit can be renewed as long as you continue to work in Portugal. In the long term, you may even consider applying for permanent residency or Portuguese citizenship. The success of your career will depend on your ability to adapt to the Portuguese business environment, develop your skills and create opportunities for growth.
