WHAT IS VISA D7?

The D7 or passive income visa gives non-European citizens the right to reside and work in Portugal, as well as the freedom to move freely throughout the Schengen area without having to make a large investment or pay anything. This visa offers other privileges linked to resident status (medical care, social security coverage, education, etc.).

Passive income is defined as income that requires little effort to earn and maintain. Passive income includes amounts earned by working online as a content writer, for example, graphic designer and other similar work or investments, pensions, real estate rentals, etc.

WHO IS ELIGIBLE FOR A D7 VISA?

The D7 visa can be applied for by anyone with a regular passive income sufficient to live in Portugal, and which the visa applicant can demonstrate with supporting documents. For example:

New : Work visa Portugal (New visa, easy to obtain for job seekers in Portugal)

  • Persons with income from the rental of real estate, or any other rental of goods or equipment, etc.
  • People working remotely (online).
  • Self-employed people working on their own account and with a remotely manageable business.
  • Retirees.

ADVANTAGES OF THE D7 VISA

Successful candidates enjoy the following benefits:

  • The right to live, study and work in Portugal.
  • The right to travel and move freely without a visa throughout the Schengen area.
  • The right to free education and healthcare.
  • The right to work.
  • The right to set up a business in Portugal.
  • The right to Portuguese tax status.
  • The right to permanent residence in Portugal after five years.
  • The right to apply for Portuguese citizenship after 6 years.
  • The right to reunite (spouse, children, parents, minor siblings).
  • Access to and protection of the law and the Portuguese legal system.

D7 VISA REQUIREMENTS

  • The minimum monthly income must be equal to or preferably higher than the SMIC, i.e. the minimum wage in Portugal (€665 per month or €7,980 per year). Note that this salary must be stable and justified.
  • Spend six consecutive months or eight non-consecutive months in Portugal each year.
  • Plan to have a long-term residential home in Portugal, either through purchase, loan or rental.

DETAILS OF INCOME AND FINANCING REQUIREMENTS

To obtain a D7 visa, you don't need to invest in Portugal. However, you do need to prove that you have sufficient income to live in the country.
Your minimum monthly income must be at least equal to the minimum wage in Portugal. If you wish to apply for family members, you will also need to provide the following additional amounts:

  •  For adults, 50 % of the minimum wage or more.
  •  For children under 18, 30 % of the minimum wage.

Knowing that your application may be rejected if your monthly income is equal to the minimum wage, it is therefore advisable to apply for this visa if you have a monthly income higher than the minimum wage in Portugal; if the income is equal to twice the minimum wage, it's better.

It is important to note that your monthly income must be justified and stable, as you are usually asked to prove that your income has been stable and has not decreased over the last six months of the year of your application.

To increase your chances of success, it is advisable to hold a minimum amount equal to 12 months' income in a Portuguese bank account.

DOCUMENTS REQUIRED TO OBTAIN A D7 VISA

To apply for your Portuguese visa, you will need to present the following documents:

  • An application form. (which you can request from your country's consulate or download from the SEF (Serviço de Estrangeiros e Fronteiras - Foreign Service and Borders) website - Link in comments).
  • A valid passport.
  •  Two passport photos.
  • Valid travel insurance. It must cover all medical expenses, including emergency medical assistance and possible repatriation.
  • An extract from the criminal record issued by your country of origin or the country in which you have resided for more than one year.
  • Proof that you have accommodation in Portugal, whether it's a house you've rented, the home of someone you know and will be living with, or a house you've bought.
  • Documents proving possession of a stable monthly income sufficient to live in Portugal, as mentioned above, no less than the minimum wage in Portugal.
  • You must also provide a bank statement covering the last six months.

Most of the above documents must be translated into Portuguese and officially certified by the Portuguese embassy in your country. In some countries, documents in English or French are accepted.

RENEWAL AND MINIMUM LENGTH OF STAY

Before obtaining permanent resident status or Portuguese nationality (citizenship), you must comply with the residence and renewal conditions as explained in this table:

Period  Minimum stay in PortugalRenewal dateRenewal option available
Years 1 and 26 consecutive months or 8 non-consecutive months each yearEnd of year 23-year residence permit
Grades 3, 4 and 56 consecutive months or
8 non-consecutive months each year
End of year 53-year residence permit OR permanent residence card OR citizenship (Portuguese nationality)

PROCEDURES AND STEPS FOR OBTAINING A D7 VISA

First step: applying for a visa to enter Portugal.

You must go to the Portuguese consulate or embassy in your country. There you will submit your visa application. It's best to contact the embassy to find out about any additional documents you may need.

One of the most important requirements is proof of residence in Portugal, which means that you must rent or buy a property before applying for the visa. If you have friends or acquaintances in Portugal, they can also prepare an accommodation certificate for you. You need to mention that you live with these people in the same place.

Once your application has been approved, you will receive a four-month visa.

Stage 2: Application for a two-year residence permit

You must apply to the SEF for an effective residence permit. This process takes place after your arrival in Portugal, and you can obtain a two-year residence permit in the country, which is renewable as long as you still meet all the conditions of the same visa.

The procedure can take around two months. However, if some of your documents are missing or if you fill in the forms incorrectly, it may take longer.

You should also note that the time it takes to obtain a residence permit (once you've arrived in Portugal) may vary depending on where you plan to live. If you're planning to live in Lisbon, for example, you may have to wait approximately four months before you can speak to SEF officials.

This is because there are many requests for this type of visa in the big cities. But if you want to live in the countryside or in less crowded cities, the duration can be as short as 15 days.

The following family members may be included:
    - Spouse or equivalent ;
    - Children of the couple or of either spouse, under the age of 18;
    - Children aged 18 to 24, provided they are fully dependent on the couple or on one of the spouses.

    1. Hello,

For the d7 residence card, here are the passive income requirements
      :
Passive income requirements for married couples
When applying for a D7 visa as a married couple, the minimum passive income required for a dependent adult is 50 %. An additional €387.5 per month is required for the dependent adult. This equates to a total of €4,650 per year for your spouse. So, for yourself and your spouse (or dependent adult), you'll need a total of €13,950 per year.

Passive income required for dependent children
The minimum passive income required for children under 18 is €232.5 per month or €2,790 per year. This is equivalent to approximately 30 % of the total passive income required of the principal applicant.

Although there is no minimum requirement regarding your personal assets, Portuguese immigration authorities may ask you to provide proof of additional savings.

Normally, passive income is different from income from remote work, but you can always give it a try

Passive income considered eligible includes :

      Your retirement
      Income from property rentals
      Transferable actions
      Royalty
Dividends on your shares in a company
      Intellectual property rights
      Income from a long-term fixed-rate financial investment
      Interest from your savings

If your employer can issue you a certificate and transfer your income to Portugal, you will be very lucky to get a d7 visa.

To renew your residence card, you must stay 6 consecutive months or 8 non-consecutive months in Portugal. After 5 or 6 years, you can apply for a permanent residence card or nationality.

Since you already have a Schengen visa, the best thing to do is to go to your country and create an account and tax ID... You can also do this via remote intermediaries at a cost of around 5000 dirhams...

Proof of income will be required.
