The McCain Freedom Fellowship is an annual award presented by the International Republican Instituteis a non-profit organization. Its aim is to recognize and support individuals who have distinguished themselves through their defense of freedom, democracy and human rights worldwide. Winners of the scholarship receive a financial award and support for their activities in defense of freedoms.
The International Republican Institute (IRI) is a non-profit organization founded in 1983 that strives to promote democracy, human rights and responsible governance worldwide. It does so primarily by supporting policy development projects and providing mentoring and training to political leaders and civil society organizations.
IRI is funded primarily by the U.S. government, but also receives contributions from individuals, foundations and other organizations. It is governed by a Board of Directors made up of members of the Republican Party in the United States and well-known figures from the world of business and politics. IRI has offices in over 50 countries worldwide, and works with local partners to implement its projects.

Scholarship eligibility criteria
To be eligible for the McCain Freedom Fellowship, you must meet the following criteria:
- Be between the ages of 21 and 40.
- Demonstrating courage and determination in defense of freedom, democracy and human rights.
- Be a citizen of a country other than the United States.
- Be able to demonstrate a commitment to continue its efforts in defense of freedom in the future.
- Fluency in English ;
- Solid experience in politics, government and/or the private sector, with a preference for those with cross-sector experience;
- Demonstrate a proven track record and passion for defending democratic reform and the free market;
- Maintain a position of authority and leadership within the community.
In addition to meeting the basic criteria of age, citizenship and defense of freedom, the candidate's ability to inspire others, the impact of his or her commitment on society and the positive changes he or she has brought about, creativity and originality, as well as the ability to adapt and learn new strategies in difficult contexts may also be taken into account when selecting the winners of the McCain Freedom Fellowship. However, it should be noted that these criteria are not exhaustive, and that the selection committee may take other factors into account in its final decision.
How can I take part in the McCain Fellowship?
To participate, submit an online application on the Institute's website. The application must include a CV, cover letter and references. The selection committee, made up of International Republican Institute and leading figures from the worlds of business, politics and human rights will review the applications and select the winners.
Make sure your CV highlights your experience in defending freedom and democracy, and that your cover letter clearly explains why you want to take part in the McCain Fellowship and how you intend to use the award to further your work defending freedom.
