The SBW Berlin Scholarship, dedicated to financially disadvantaged international students, offers a unique opportunity to pursue a Bachelor's or Master's degree at one of the prestigious universities located in Berlin or Potsdam. In addition to being an invaluable learning opportunity, this scholarship has a significant condition: the scholar must commit to working in their home country for at least 18 months upon completion of their study program.

  • Tuition fee exemption.
  • Accommodation in a shared room.
  • A monthly allowance of up to 550 euros.
  • Round-trip travel allowance between country of origin and Berlin.
  • A German or English course, if necessary.
  • A grant for the social project, if necessary.

A total of 20 scholarships are available each year.

Eligible countries

Applicants from Eastern European, African, Asian and South American countries can apply for this scholarship. Other categories of eligible applicants include recognized refugees, homeless people, holders of an EU settlement permit or long-term residence permit. Students from EU and EEA countries who have worked in Germany in a study-related activity before returning to their studies are also eligible.

Eligibility criteria

Applicants for SBW Berlin scholarships must meet several criteria. They must be between 18 and 30 years old, have average grades corresponding to a German grade point average of at least 2.0, and not have stayed in Germany for more than 18 months before applying. Additionally, they must not have any immediate family members permanently residing in Germany and must commit to working in their home country for at least 18 months after graduation. Applicants must also have professional or volunteer experience in the nonprofit sector and be able to demonstrate relatively low net income.

Preparing your application for the SBW Berlin scholarship

You will then need to prepare the following documents as they will need to be uploaded at the end of the online application form:

  • Project description (two or five pages)
  • A copy of your most recent school or university transcript showing your GPA and an overview of the assessment.
  • A copy of your highest academic qualification (high school or university diploma) with your GPA and an overview of the assessment.

If available, copies of the following documents should also be included:

  • University admission or proof of your qualification for university entrance (Berlin/Potsdam)
  • A copy of an internationally recognized language certificate for the language in which your studies will be carried out. (Such a certificate will be required during the verification process at the latest.)
  • All previous work, training, apprenticeship and internship certificates.
  • If you have already started your studies, all university transcripts and results obtained so far (assessed and unassessed).

All applicants are recommended to submit the following additional documents, which are not mandatory:

  • One or two letters of recommendation from professors, teachers, employers, etc.
  • Proof of net household income

You must submit your application and all attached certificates and supporting documents in PDF format, in German or English. If a document was issued in another language, a translation into German or English is also required. Simple copies and simple translations are sufficient for the application.

The motivation letter
