The United Nations Volunteers (UNV) program is a United Nations organization that contributes to peace and development through volunteerism worldwide.

Why become a United Nations volunteer?

As a United Nations volunteer, you have more opportunities to work in international organizations. The UN regularly calls on volunteers to work in UN agencies, both in development programs and in peacekeeping operations. More than 8,000 UN volunteers have been deployed worldwide. The UN Volunteers program is responsible for the process of recruiting and placing volunteers to gain practical UN experience while supporting UN activities with their talents and skills in the field, in regional offices and at headquarters.

UN Volunteer Program allowances and benefits

According to UN Volunteers, the allowances are intended to enable international UN volunteers to maintain a decent standard of living in their various duty stations.

Benefits should not be interpreted as a quid pro quo, reimbursement or salary in exchange for volunteering.

The different allowances are :

Volunteer living allowance a monthly allowance to cover the daily living expenses of the volunteer and his/her family (if it accompanies it).

Travel expenses Travel expenses: to cover travel to the place of assignment and return home at the end of the assignment: Calculated according to the duration of the assignment and paid locally at the start of the assignment.

Reconsolidation allowance calculated on the basis of the duration of the assignment and its conditions, and paid at the end of the assignment.

Volunteers may also be entitled to other types of allowances or compensation, depending on the nature and location of the assignment.

In addition to his benefits, the UN volunteer is covered by insurance life, health and disability for the entire duration of its assignment.

UNV application procedure.

Those wishing to become a United Nations volunteer must first register on the UNV volunteer management application website and fill in a profile, which will be added to the list of volunteers interested in the program, Global Talent Pool.

You will be asked to provide as much information as possible about your qualifications, skills and professional experience. According to UNV rules and standards, the minimum age for international assignments is 25, and for national assignments 22. The main requirements are a bachelor's degree or higher technical diploma (a master's degree may be required depending on the type of activity), two years' relevant professional experience and proficiency in at least one of the following three languages: English, French or Spanish. No exams or competitions are required to prove your knowledge of a particular language.
