Immigrating to Canada: What you need to know first

Most people think that immigration to Canada involves a single program and procedure, but in reality there are dozens of programs, both at federal and provincial level. So it's imperative to be well-informed in order to choose the right immigration program, which essentially depends on your personal situation. It's for this very reason that in our first article we prefer to direct you to the official websites for information that's both detailed and up to date.

It's also important to distinguish between "an immigration program" and any formalities involved in applying for a visa or permanent residence. For example, Entrée Express is not a program in itself, or even a possible immigration procedure. It is first and foremost an online electronic selection system used to select eligible candidates for certain immigration programs. Since the adoption of this system, over 100,000 new migrants a year have passed through the system, hence its reputation.

Immigration to Canada via Express Entry

Anyone can create an Express Entry profile online, but it's simply irrelevant if you don't meet the selection criteria for one of the three programs that use the Express Entry system.

"What is Express Entry?

Express Entry is a computerized system used to process applications from immigrants who wish to come to Canada as a skilled worker. Broadly speaking, these are the following programs:

  • The Skilled Worker Program. (For applicants withwork experience abroad and who meets certain educational and other criteria)
  • The Skilled Trades Program. (For those qualified in a specialized trade with a valid job offer or competency certificate)
  • The Canadian Experience Program. (For candidates withCanadian work experience)

How does the Express Entry system work?

Express Entry identifies people with specific skills and invites them to apply for permanent residency in Canada. The global ranking system, based on research conducted by the Canadian government, is used to determine which applicants will succeed in the Canadian job market. People with higher levels of education, work experience and fluency in English or French are more likely to succeed, and Express Entry immigrants generally perform better in the job market.

Qualified candidates are placed in one or more candidate groups (pools). These candidates may subsequently be invited to apply for :

  • Work permits through International Experience Canada ;
  • Permanent residence throughExpress Input.

Candidates in a express entry basin are classified according to a global grading system (GCS), based on several factors:

  • Factors related to education and work experience ;
  • Spousal factors ;
  • Factors related to the transferability of skills ;
  • Factors related to the provincial candidate (a reserved job offer, a Canadian degree, a brother or sister in Canada, etc.).

Top-ranked candidates have a better chance of receiving an invitation.

If you are applying under the Federal Skilled Worker Program, your score must exceed a set minimum. Once in the pool, you will receive an SCG score. Your score determines your rank in the express entry pool. The minimum CRS score is set by the Express Entry draw. Depending on your score, you may receive an invitation to a Canadian immigration interview and permanent residency. But remember, there's no guarantee of success, whatever your skill level.

SCG Canada - How to get a good CRS score?

The Global Ranking System is a scoring system that evaluates the potential of each candidate. This includes their education, language skills in English and French, and work experience. Applicants with more than one year's study after the Bac can score up to 84 points, while applicants with three or more years' study can score up to 140 points. SGC also assesses the educational level of the candidate's spouse. If both candidates have at least a bachelor's degree, they will obtain a total of 600 points.

A good command of the language is crucial when applying for a Canadian immigration program, so it's essential to pass one of the following language tests IELTS or the CELPIP for English or Le TEF or the TCF for French to be considered. With a higher language skills score, candidates can also earn more points in the basic/human capital section. And if they have some Canadian work experience, they can add extra points to their score in the skills transferability section. What's more, if they have a post-secondary diploma, this will strengthen their profile and help them apply to various reputable organizations.

Steps to immigrate to Canada via the "Express Entry" system

In this guide you'll find everything you need to know and do to apply for permanent residence under the Express Entry scheme.

Estimated duration 180 days

Step 1: Find out if you qualify for the Express Entry program.

To qualify, you must first ensure that your work experience, as defined by the NOC, is eligible for the Express Entry program.
You can then find the code and skill type of your profession on this link: CNP CANADA.CA (Table at the bottom of the page)

You can also check your eligibility for one of the three programs managed by the "Entrée Express" system in these links:
Federal Skilled Worker Program
Federal Skilled Trades Program
Canadian Experience Category

Step 2: Complete your language test and obtain a diploma evaluation.

Degrees earned abroad must be certified by an IRCC-accredited institution. In addition, you must pass tests in English and/or French and obtain a minimum number of points to be eligible. It is essential to pass one of the language tests recognized by the Canadian immigration service: IELTS or the CELPIP for English or Le TEF or the TCF for French.
For your diplomas, use the WES service: wes.org/ca to get your EDE (Evaluation of educational qualifications).

Step 3: Submit your profile on the Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) website.

Once you've completed the first two steps, you're sure to have obtained your EDEand you've passed your language tests. Follow this link: Login and create your Entry Express profile and select Option 1 CléGC to create your profile, then click on "Register" on the right-hand side of the page. Follow the steps on the site.
NB: don't do this if you don't yet have your diploma evaluations and language tests.

Step 4: Wait until you receive an IPD (ITA) invitation from IRCC.

The Invitation to File an Application (IFA) is a document issued by the Canadian Ministry of Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship (IRCC) to applicants registered with the Express Entry system. Applicants can apply for permanent residency in Canada, with processing times not exceeding six months.
If you have accepted the invitation in your Express Entry account, you have 60 days from the date the invitation was issued to complete additional forms.

Step 5: Submit your Application for Permanent Residence (APR) documents and pay the application fee.

You must submit digital copies of the required documents related to your application. These documents must be in English or French and, if necessary, translated by a qualified, certified translator.
Examples of documents you will need to submit:

Umedical examination
Police certificate(s)
Proof of sufficient funds
Documents relating to declared SRC points (work experience, education, valid job offer, provincial or territorial certificate of qualification, family member in Canada, etc.).

At the time you submit your application, you must pay a processing fee applicable to all persons who will be coming to Canada with you. The average processing fee is 850 $ per adult and 230 $ per dependent child.

IRCC will then send you an acknowledgement of receipt (AOR).

Step 6: Wait for IRCC to make a final decision on your AOR.

IRCC aims to finalize applications in 6 months or less. Once your application has been approved, you will receive a Confirmation of Permanent Residence (COPR) and a Permanent Resident Visa (if you are from a country that requires a visa) so that you can travel to Canada and complete your settlement.

Estimated Cost: 850 USD

How to apply for the Provincial Nominee Program (PNP)

The Provincial Nominee Program (PNP) is a popular immigration channel in Canada that allows provinces to choose the people they want to bring to live there. To participate, candidates must meet certain requirements in that province and satisfy federal government requirements. Each province/territory has specific selection criteria for each of its categories to select the right candidates for nomination. Obtaining provincial nomination allows the candidate to apply to the federal government and become a permanent resident of Canada. If a candidate is part of the Express Entry pool, he or she will receive an additional 600 points, enabling them to be automatically invited to apply for permanent residency in the next draw.

To qualify, applicants must first submit an application to the province in which they intend to live. After receiving notification that their intention to apply is confirmed, applicants must then submit the required documents to the provincial agency. They must also update their application information in the "Entée Express" system, if registered.

Here are the links to the immigration pages for each province:

There are over 75 PCP immigration streams and categories to keep an eye on for your opportunity to Fast, guaranteed immigration to Canada via provincial invitations. That's why we strongly recommend that you periodically visit the links above, as well as following our articles on Canada.

ARRIMA For immigration to Quebec

Arrima is a new immigration portal in Quebec, which opened to potential applicants in September 2018. It is a system expression of interest which is designed to select skilled workers for permanent residence in Quebec. It functions much like Express Entry, but is designed specifically for Quebec immigration.

The difference between Arrima and Entée Express

Arrima is an electronic system that can be used to immigrate to Quebec through almost all possible immigration channels in the Canadian province, but from the perspective of immigrating and having permanent residence in the country as a skilled worker, we note the following differences:

  • The main difference between Arrima and Entrée Express is that Arrima can only be used for immigration to Quebec.
  • The Arrima system takes longer to respond to requests.
  • Arrima reduces the funds required to immigrate to Canada.
  • The program is designed primarily for French speakers.
  • Arrima favors certain business categories.
  • Arrima favors people with children, especially very young children.

In this article, we'll look at two Quebec immigration programs that are part of the Arrima system, the Regular Skilled Worker Program (RSWP) and Temporary Foreign Worker Program.

Regular Skilled Worker Program (RSWP) - Quebec

The Regular Skilled Worker Program (RSWP) is an immigration program set up by Quebec to attract skilled foreign workers. Eligible candidates must possess the skills and qualifications required to work in Canada, and demonstrate an aptitude for professional integration. Other factors that the government takes into account when assessing candidates are language proficiency, age, the presence of children and the skills of the candidate's spouse.

To apply to the QTRP, a candidate must complete an expression of interest profile. The profile will include personal information, work experience and educational information. Individuals may also submit their application through Arrima, the Quebec Immigration Department's online portal. Candidates will be selected for permanent selection after the Ministère de l'Immigration has reviewed the pool of expressions of interest.

Temporary Foreign Worker Program - Quebec.

The program aims to provide a source of temporary foreign workers for employers facing short-term skills and labor shortages.

The Quebec government has defined certain conditions for employers requesting temporary foreign workers. First, employers must ensure that all employees are legally bound by an employment contract. In addition, they must cover the cost of transporting foreign workers to and from work. In addition, employers must provide low-cost housing for hired foreign workers and provide them with health insurance, if they hire workers earning less than the minimum wage.

Get a temporary job offer in Quebec

To obtain a temporary job offer in Quebec, we recommend that you monitor the Quebec job sites (links below) and, above all, register with the " Quebec Days "Once you've registered, you can apply directly for jobs that may be of interest to you.
