The UK's Royal Horticultural Society (RHS) has announced the launch of its annual photography competition for the 2022 season.
The competition is open to garden enthusiasts, horticulturists and professional photographers.
Categories :
1 - Celebrating gardens : You can enter this category either by taking a photo of your own garden, RHS park, any part of a small town or outdoor recreation area, or by trying to take photos from an upstairs window or capture the pleasure people have in being in an outdoor space.
2 - Welcoming Garden Wildlife : You can subscribe to this category by capturing beautiful photographs of insects, birds and creatures found in the wild in and around your garden. Images can be close-ups or wider views of wild animals enjoying the outdoor environment.

3 - All about plants Photos in this category should show plants as a whole. For example, if the photo features a flower, its stem and leaves should be shown. Photos can also include a group of plants.
4 - Abstract :In this category, creativity and imagination are encouraged. You can submit abstract images of plants or gardens. Image processing and graphic approaches are welcome.

5 - Urban gardening The images can be of any green space in cities and can contain people. The aim of this category is to highlight the importance of outdoor spaces in urban areas.
5 - Under 18s (ages 11-17) Any photograph depicting a subject related to plants, gardens or wildlife that interests you.
6 - Under 11 Any photograph depicting an element related to plants, gardens or wildlife that interests you.
7 - Social media All photos related to horticulture, flora and fauna or gardens can be submitted via Twitter, Instagram or Facebook by writing the hashtag #RHSPhotoComp, up to five photos per month.
NB (regarding category 7 ): The monthly shortlist will be selected by the RHS social media team and an RHS judge, and the winner will be elected by our social media followers. Each monthly winner will then be factored into the contest judging to determine the overall category winner.
8 - Portfolio This category is open to both amateur and professional photographers. This category is for a compilation of six images that are part of a sequence or based on a common theme or style. Shortlisted photographs will be exhibited and judged at an RHS exhibition in summer 2021.
Awards :
The winner of the RHS photo contest will win 5,000 GBP. That's over $6,000 USD.
The prize for the young winner of the RHS photography competition will be 750 GBP worth of Wex Photographic vouchers.
Adult categories :
- First place: 500 GBP + RHS gift membership.
- Second place: GBP 250.
- Third place: 150 GBP.
Portfolio category :
- Best exhibition: 500 GBP + RHS gift membership.
- RHS medals are awarded.
Under 18s :
- First place: £150 worth of Wex Photographic vouchers.
- Second place: £75 worth of Wex Photographic vouchers.
- Third place: £50 worth of Wex Photographic vouchers.
Under-11s :
- First place: £150 worth of Wex Photographic vouchers.
- Second place: £75 worth of Wex Photographic vouchers.
- Third place: £50 worth of Wex Photographic vouchers.
Eligibility requirements :
- The RHS photo competition is open to all.
- The participant must be the creator of the original work and hold the sole copyright.
Images must not be licensed or licensed in any way that would conflict with the competition. - Images that have been made available on stock libraries and may have drawn publicity from them may be disqualified at the discretion of the judges.
- Images that have won or been recommended or received notable publicity in a major competition prior to the submission deadline or judging will be disqualified at the discretion of the judges.
- The submitted image may not be entered in any other competition after it has been entered in the RHS photographic competition until the results have been announced at an RHS exhibition.
- The RHS requires that prior authorization be obtained before submitting photographs of private property or gardens.
- Visitors to the RHS gardens at Wisley, Harlow Carr, Rosemoor and Hyde Hall are encouraged to capture and share photographic moments for personal, non-commercial use and do not need prior permission to enter the RHS photographic competition.
- It is the participant's responsibility to ensure that all necessary authorizations are obtained from any person appearing in a photograph.
- Entrants in the "Under 18" category must be aged between 11 and 17 on the day the competition closes.
- Entrants in the "Under 11" category must be under 11 years of age on the day the competition closes.
